Study
We encourage all members of Ascension Church to engage with the Bible on a regular basis, as part of their growth as Christians. This can be done in a number of ways; reading or even listening at home, or at work, or on the way to work. However, what we find really helps is when we come together to share in this experience.
-Bible study in person : on Saturday mornings in church. For this, please contact Lola at:
Email: Lolakinlade@gmail.com
-Bible study Online : A group meets every Wednesday at 7.30pm - 9.00pm on Zoom
to explore what God is saying to us through the Bible.
Last topics have included:
Wednesday 24th June ( updates every Wednesday)
Start by reading the passage :
-Read Matthew 3:13-17
•In being baptized, Jesus fully identified with us, symbolically dying the death which we deserve,
(this death being buried in the waters) and then rising to new life (physically rising up from
the waters) This would foretell what Jesus would literally do, just a few years later.
When Jesus says this is necessary to ‘fulfil all righteousness’, this is what he is referring to.
In what way does being baptized mean that we then identify with Jesus?
How does the physical action of full immersion baptism pick up on these themes of dying and
rising to new life?
Romans 6:4-6
How does this help our understanding?
If you can remember your baptism, share a few words about it (no longer than 2 minutes each!)
How might you encourage Lomembe and Hamid who are being baptized this week?
Read Galatians 3:26-29
How does baptism make us all equal?
When someone has been fully immersed, they come out of the water physically dripping wet.
I always think that this is a wonderful image of the Holy Spirit pouring out of someone, such is
the filling of God’s love. The word baptism means ‘to immerse’ or ‘to drench’, which is what
God promises to do for us, with His Spirit.
Spend some time praying for each other, and especially those to be baptized this week,
that we would each be renewed afresh by God’s Holy Spirit.
If you are interested, you are very welcome to join us.
